The glow of ceremonial lights, the rhythm of cultural performances and the applause that echoed through the gala hall in Port Harcourt told a story beyond celebration—it was a tribute to courage, sacrifice and unwavering service to the nation.

As part of activities marking the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL), the Nigerian Army brought together serving personnel, veterans, government officials and military leaders from across Africa for a Gala Night that underscored its enduring commitment to national security, professionalism and the welfare of its personnel.

The event, according to a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, served as both a celebration of the Army’s achievements and a reaffirmation of its vision for the future.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, described NADCEL 2026 as another milestone in the Nigerian Army’s transformation journey.

He said the nationwide activities showcased the army as a strategic institution promoting national cohesion, stability and professionalism.

He also said that the army’s legacy of courage, resilience and selfless service continued to strengthen national security and public confidence in the Armed Forces.

Reflecting on the price of peace, the Army Chief paid tribute to the nation’s fallen heroes, noting that their sacrifices remained the foundation for building a safer and more secured Nigeria.

He reaffirmed the army’s commitment to the Constitution, personnel welfare and continuous improvement of its operational capabilities.

Shaibu also acknowledged the support of President Bola Tinubu, thanking him for strengthening the Army through enhanced operational resources, force development and improved mission readiness.

The ceremony also highlighted the partnership between the military and civil authorities in maintaining peace and security.

In his remarks, Gov. Siminalayi Fubara praised officers and soldiers for their sacrifices in defence of the nation.

Fubara represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Dagogo Wokoma, also paid tribute to the nation’s fallen heroes and expressed solidarity with their families.

He commended the Nigerian army for sustaining peace and security in the state through collaboration with the 6 Division.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the army through logistics, operational assistance and personnel welfare.

Earlier, the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Maj.-Gen. Musa Etsu-Ndagi, said NADCEL 2026 highlighted the army’s operational achievements, humanitarian activities and expanding strategic partnerships.

Etsu-Ndagi commended the humanitarian initiatives of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) and the successful hosting of the African Land Forces Forum.

He also appreciated the state government, African army chiefs, veterans and former ECOMOG Force Commander, retired Maj.-Gen. Felix Mujakperuo, for their contributions to regional peace and security.

Beyond the speeches, the evening celebrated the rich traditions and evolving identity of the Nigerian Army. Guests were treated to colourful cultural performances, documentaries chronicling the Army’s journey, musical displays and award presentations recognising African army chiefs and distinguished veterans whose contributions have advanced regional and continental security.

The gala closed on a note of reflection and optimism, reinforcing the message that while the Nigerian Army continues to honour its past, it remains focused on strengthening its capabilities, deepening partnerships and preparing for the security challenges of the future.
