David Allan Coe, the controversial and influential figure in outlaw country music, has died at the age of 86.

His death was confirmed on Wednesday by his wife, Kimberly Hastings Coe, in a statement to Rolling Stone. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Coe was widely recognised for his gritty storytelling and rebellious style, which helped define the outlaw country movement. He penned the working-class anthem “Take This Job and Shove It” and gained widespread popularity with songs such as “You Never Even Called Me By My Name.”

Throughout his career, Coe built a loyal fan base with his unapologetic lyrics and distinctive voice, cementing his place as one of country music’s most enduring and polarising figures.
