2 Killed, Dozens Affected as Car Rams Crowd in Leipzig
Two people have been killed and multiple others injured after a car drove into a crowd in central Leipzig on Monday, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred on Grimmaische Strasse, a busy pedestrian area in the city centre. Emergency services declared a mass casualty situation, with officials estimating that around 20 people were affected, though the exact number of injuries remains unclear.
Police in Saxony said the driver fled the scene shortly after the crash but was later arrested. Authorities have stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung said the situation is now under control, adding that investigators have yet to determine a motive for the attack.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the vehicle sped through the pedestrian zone, striking people before disappearing from view. Emergency responders, including ambulances and air rescue services, were quickly deployed to the area.
Police have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information and to rely on official updates as investigations continue.
The incident adds to a series of recent vehicle-ramming attacks across Germany, though authorities have not indicated whether this case is linked to previous events.
Investigations are ongoing.
