As nations across the globe commemorated the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Friday, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, issued a passionate call for collective action to stem the tide of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, describing prevention as the most effective path to safeguarding lives and securing the future of young people.

In a message released in Abuja to mark the annual observance, Mrs Tinubu stressed that the fight against substance abuse cannot be left to governments alone. Rather, she urged parents, teachers, community leaders, faith-based organisations and civil society groups to work together in creating safer environments where children and young people can flourish.

This year’s global observance is themed, “The evidence is clear: invest in prevention. Break the cycle. #StopOrganisedCrime.” The theme, according to the First Lady, reinforces the importance of proactive measures in addressing both substance abuse and the criminal networks that thrive on it.

Mrs Tinubu noted that prevention remains a powerful tool in protecting individuals, families and communities from the devastating consequences of drug abuse.

“It reminds us that prevention through education, awareness, family support, and community engagement remains one of the most effective tools in addressing substance abuse and criminal networks.

“I call on governments, families, schools, faith-based organisations, and civil society to strengthen their collective commitment to creating safe, inclusive, and supportive environments where every child and young person can thrive.

“Let us create an environment where every child will realise their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society through sustained advocacy, care and support systems,” Mrs Tinubu said.

Her message comes amid growing concerns over the social and economic impact of drug abuse, particularly among young people, and highlights the need for sustained investment in preventive programmes, awareness campaigns and support systems.

By aligning with the global call to break the cycle of addiction and organised crime, the First Lady reaffirmed the importance of a united response, emphasizing that every sector of society has a role to play in protecting vulnerable populations and building healthier communities.

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world in observing the day, the message is clear: prevention, partnership and sustained commitment remain key to winning the battle against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
