The Delta State Police Command has recorded another breakthrough in its fight against violent crime, following the arrest of a suspected member of a three-man armed robbery syndicate and the recovery of firearms and other incriminating items in the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this on Wednesday in Warri, saying the suspect was arrested by operatives of the Ebrumede Police Division in Uvwie Local Government Area.
According to Edafe, the arrest was made on Tuesday during an intensive stop-and-search operation carried out by police personnel along Garki-Uti Road, Effurun, where three suspected armed robbers were intercepted.
He explained that while the suspects were being questioned, two members of the gang escaped on a motorcycle, prompting the police to launch a coordinated manhunt to track them down.
The police spokesman said a search of the suspects’ bag led to the recovery of firearms, ammunition and other items suspected to have been used in criminal operations.
Edafe said: “Exhibits recovered from the suspects include two locally made double-barrel guns, 11 live cartridges, one expended cartridge, one axe, two Android phones.
“Others are two power banks, two wristwatches, one lighter and one camouflage military polo”.
He added that preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were conveying the recovered items to their hideout along Sapele Road.
The arrested suspect, according to the police, remains in custody as investigations continue, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing members of the gang.
The Delta Police Command assured residents that it would sustain its operations against criminal elements across the state, urging members of the public to continue providing useful information that could assist security agencies in preventing crime and apprehending suspects.
