Cow Prices Hit N2.5m as Butchers Urge Fast-Track of Ranching Projects

The Lagos State Butchers Association has raised alarm over the sharp rise in the price of cows, which has surged to as high as N2.5 million, up from about N1.7 million in 2025.

The association’s patron, Bamidele Kazeem, attributed the increase to worsening insecurity, rising transportation costs, and delays in implementing local ranching initiatives.

Speaking in Lagos on Sunday, Kazeem said cows that previously sold for N1.7 million now go for between N2.3 million and N2.4 million, with some reaching N2.5 million in recent weeks.

He noted that the surge has placed significant pressure on both traders and consumers, with many butchers struggling to sustain their businesses.

“The car I bought in 2020 for N2.1 million is now cheaper than the price of a cow. That shows how expensive cows have become,” he said.

Kazeem added that cows priced around N1 million have virtually disappeared from the market, describing the current situation as far worse than what was experienced the previous year.

He linked the rising costs to insecurity affecting livestock movement across parts of the country, as well as increased fuel prices, which have driven up transportation expenses—especially for cattle supplied from northern Nigeria.

According to him, local production has not been able to meet demand due to delays in the state’s ranching and feedlot programmes.

He urged the government to expedite the implementation of the Eko Ranching Project, noting that it would boost local supply, reduce reliance on northern sources, and help stabilise meat prices.

Kazeem added that beyond lowering costs, the ranching initiative could also create employment opportunities for youths and strengthen the state’s livestock sector.
