The Lagos State Police Command has detained 98 suspects in connection with armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, possession of arms, and hard drugs.
Commissioner of Police Olanrewaju Ishola confirmed the arrests while parading the suspects at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja on Wednesday. He stated that the arrests were made within his first week as Commissioner of Police in Lagos.
Ishola emphasized that screening of the suspects is ongoing to determine those who will be charged in court.
NAN reports that CP Ishola took over leadership of the Lagos State Police Command on Sept. 17 from AIG Adegoke Fayoade, who is now in charge of Zone 2 Command.
The police commissioner also disclosed that within this period, the command recovered 10 firearms, 41 live ammunition, 12 mobile phones, $402 (approximately N650,000), 39 bags of cement, a vehicle, a laptop, a ton of iron rods, and various substances suspected to be hard drugs, along with other items including axes, hammers, daggers, knives, and charms.
Commissioner Ishola issued a stern warning to criminals in Lagos, stating that they would face severe consequences if they continued their illegal activities. He also advised the public to exercise caution when boarding commercial vehicles, noting ongoing efforts to ensure that all commercial buses have identification tags to help combat crime.
The police chief urged the judiciary to ensure suspected criminals brought before the court do not easily reintegrate into society, and he warned his officers against unprofessional conduct, promising strict consequences for any misconduct.
