Romuald Wadagni has been elected president of Benin in a landslide victory, according to provisional results released by the electoral commission.

The 49-year-old secured more than 94% of the vote with around 90% of ballots counted, a margin officials described as “irreversible.” Widely seen as the frontrunner, Wadagni’s path to victory was largely uncontested after the main opposition party, the Democrats, failed to field a candidate.

His only challenger, Paul Hounkpè, conceded defeat even before the final tally was completed, acknowledging that early results clearly pointed to Wadagni’s win. He also called for unity, saying democracy requires respect and the ability to move beyond political divisions.

Wadagni was backed by outgoing President Patrice Talon, who was ineligible to run for a third term under constitutional limits. The absence of a strong opposition candidate led many observers to view the election as largely procedural.

Benin’s electoral rules require presidential hopefuls to secure endorsements from sitting lawmakers, a threshold the Democrats’ candidate was unable to meet. Voter turnout stood at 58.75%.

As he prepares to take office, Wadagni faces significant challenges, including rising insecurity and persistent poverty, particularly in northern regions of the country. Attacks linked to the Al-Qaeda-affiliated group JNIM have intensified, with dozens of soldiers killed in recent incidents.

Despite these concerns, Benin remains one of West Africa’s more stable democracies, even as the region has experienced a wave of military coups in recent years.
