Suspect at Large After Fatal Stabbing in French Mosque, Macron Condemns Attack
Authorities say a man suspected of fatally stabbing a Muslim worshipper inside a mosque in southern France remains at large, two days after the brutal attack.
The killing occurred on Friday at a mosque in the former mining town of La Grand-Combe. Prime Minister Francois Bayrou denounced the incident as an “Islamophobic” act, while President Emmanuel Macron described the victim as having been “horribly murdered” in a statement shared on social media.
According to local media, the suspect allegedly recorded the assault on his phone and was seen on security footage shouting insults directed at “Allah,” the Arabic word for God.
Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin condemned the act as a “despicable murder” that “wounds the hearts of all believers, of all Muslims in France.” Prime Minister Bayrou also expressed solidarity, saying, “We stand with the victim’s loved ones and with the shocked believers.”
Reports indicate both the victim and the attacker were alone in the mosque when the assault happened. The Grand Mosque of Paris also condemned the attack, revealing that the victim had just finished cleaning the mosque before he was killed.
Authorities are continuing their search for the suspect as investigations into the attack are underway.
