Tanzania’s Ndugulile Nominated as Next WHO African Regional Director
Dr. Faustine Ndugulile of Tanzania has been nominated as the next Regional Director for the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region, succeeding Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, who served two five-year terms.
Ndugulile’s nomination was confirmed during the 74th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, following a vote by African Member States. Other contenders included Dr. Boureima Sambo of Niger, Dr. Ibrahima Fall of Senegal, and Dr. Richard Mihigo of Rwanda, according to a WHO statement.
In his acceptance speech, Ndugulile expressed his gratitude and commitment to advancing healthcare across Africa. “I am truly honoured and humbled to be elected. I thank Member States for their trust and look forward to working together to build a healthier Africa,” he said.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus congratulated Ndugulile, highlighting the great responsibility ahead and offering support from the global WHO community. Ghebreyesus also praised the other candidates for their efforts and thanked Moeti for her decade of service, calling her leadership exemplary.
Moeti congratulated Ndugulile and expressed confidence in his ability to lead. “I know you will accelerate the gains already made, with the health and well-being of the people of Africa at the centre,” she said.
Ndugulile’s nomination will be submitted for formal approval by the WHO Executive Board in February 2025. Upon appointment, he will serve a five-year term, with the possibility of reappointment.
