The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), in collaboration with its Japanese partners, has donated advanced 3D prosthetic equipment to the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board (MRTB) to boost rehabilitation services and innovation in Nigeria.

The equipment was officially handed over during a high-level ceremony hosted by the MRTB on Friday in Abuja, marking another major step toward strengthening prosthetics, orthotics practice and rehabilitation technology across the country.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Rufai Ahmad, Registrar of the Board, described the donation as a significant milestone in advancing rehabilitation technology and enhancing professional capacity development in Nigeria. He also expressed appreciation to the partners for their confidence in the institution.

Ahmad reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to ensuring the successful implementation and sustainability of the project, noting that the equipment would greatly improve training, research and service delivery within Nigeria’s rehabilitation and healthcare sectors.

“This project will enhance rehabilitation technology and strengthen the capacity of professionals in prosthetics and orthotics practice across the country,” Ahmad said, noting that it would further improve healthcare delivery nationwide.

Also speaking, Mr. Philbert Johnson, Director and UNIDO Country Representative in Nigeria and ECOWAS, said the initiative underscored the link between humanitarian and developmental efforts aimed at supporting vulnerable populations through rehabilitation services.

“It is a pleasure to be part of this project which will contribute immensely to strengthening rehabilitation services in Nigeria,” Johnson said while highlighting the programme’s expected impact on healthcare delivery nationwide.

Pakouyowou said the partnership reflected a strong commitment to innovation and improved rehabilitation services in Nigeria, while stressing the importance of collaboration in advancing healthcare technology and professional capacity development across the country.

A major highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of a newly developed 3D-Printed Transtibial Socket to the Registrar, demonstrating the institution’s growing expertise in digital manufacturing and innovative prosthetic solutions for rehabilitation services.

The visiting delegation also toured the facility to inspect ongoing activities and technological advancements at the centre, underscoring efforts to strengthen rehabilitation technology, improve healthcare delivery and promote innovation within Nigeria’s rehabilitation sector.
