“Don’t Let Him Go” – Onyeka Urges NFF to Retain Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle
Super Eagles midfielder and AFCON silver medallist, Frank Onyeka, has warned the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) against parting ways with head coach Eric Chelle, describing the Franco-Malian tactician as a key factor behind Nigeria’s impressive showing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Onyeka’s comments come days after fellow international Wilfred Ndidi also appealed to the NFF to retain Chelle, who took charge of the Super Eagles in January 2025. Since his appointment, the former RC Lens defender has earned widespread praise for instilling a clear playing philosophy and improving the team’s overall performance.
Speaking in an interview with sports journalist Oma Akatugba, Onyeka said Nigeria’s attractive football at AFCON 2025 was the result of a gradual process that began long before the tournament.
“When Eric Chelle took charge, you could see what he wanted to do — his game plan and tactics,” the midfielder said. “As time went on, we blended and understood each other better, and that’s why we played so well at the AFCON, especially on the ball.”
The Brentford player noted that several observers, including former international Sunday Oliseh, described the Super Eagles’ displays in Morocco as some of the best football Nigeria have played in over two decades.
“When people say this is the best we’ve played in many years, dominating almost every team, it shows the progress we made,” Onyeka added.
Beyond tactics, Onyeka highlighted Chelle’s man-management skills, describing him as approachable, open-minded and trusted by the players.
“Eric Chelle is a good man, a lovely man. He makes you feel comfortable and gives everyone the opportunity they deserve. A lot of the players love him,” he said.
Urging the NFF to maintain stability, Onyeka concluded: “Don’t let him go. Having him as a manager is one of the best things that has happened since I joined the national team.”
Chelle’s future has been the subject of speculation following Nigeria’s strong AFCON 2025 campaign and ongoing preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Onyeka, who has scored three goals in 41 appearances for the Super Eagles, is also looking to secure a regular starting role at club level following his international exploits in Morocco.
