A roadside bomb attack in southwestern Colombia has killed at least 20 people and injured 36 others, authorities said, marking one of the deadliest attacks against civilians in the region in decades.

The blast occurred Saturday in the department of Cauca when an explosive device hidden in a culvert detonated as a traditional rural bus, known locally as a “chiva,” traveled along the Pan-American Highway near the municipality of Cajibio.

Governor Octavio Guzman said 15 women and five men were killed in the explosion. Among the 36 injured, three remain in intensive care, while five minors are recovering and no longer in danger.

“This constitutes one of the most brutal attacks against the civilian population in decades in Cauca,” Guzman said, announcing three days of mourning. A memorial ceremony for the victims is expected in the coming days.

The powerful blast left a massive crater in the roadway and damaged nearby vehicles. Initial reports suggest an additional explosive device may have been thrown toward the bus, intensifying the impact.

Authorities have launched emergency response efforts, including humanitarian aid, psychological support, and security measures for affected communities. Repairs to the highway are ongoing, with officials working to restore traffic as quickly as possible.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro blamed the attack on Ivan Mordisco, head of a dissident faction of the former FARC guerrilla group.

The bombing underscores ongoing security challenges in rural Colombia, where armed groups continue to operate despite past peace agreements.
