Kaduna Mob Burns Islamic Teacher to Death Over Unverified Child Theft Allegation

A tragic incident of mob violence has sparked outrage in Kaduna State after an Islamic teacher, identified as Malama Ummulkhairi, was allegedly beaten to death and her body set ablaze by a crowd over an unverified accusation of child theft.

The incident occurred on Saturday in the Maraban Jos area and has renewed concerns over the growing trend of jungle justice and the dangers posed by misinformation and mob action.

According to accounts from family members and community sources, the victim, a mother of more than five children and a respected Islamic teacher, had travelled from New Maraban Jos to attend an Islamic lecture reportedly held at a school in the old Maraban Jos area.

Sources said she became separated from members of her group and reportedly approached some children to ask for directions after losing her way.

Shortly afterwards, rumours reportedly spread within the community accusing her of attempting to steal children — an allegation relatives and witnesses insist had no basis.

As tensions rose, security personnel reportedly intervened and moved the woman to a nearby police station for her protection and to allow authorities investigate the claims.

Family members who arrived at the station reportedly identified her and explained that she was known in the community as an Islamic teacher. Witnesses said attempts were made to calm the crowd and encourage residents to allow law enforcement authorities carry out their investigation.

Despite those efforts, the situation later escalated.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Kaduna State Police Command confirmed that a large mob stormed the police station, overpowered officers on duty and forcibly removed the woman from custody.

She was subsequently killed and her body set on fire.

Police condemned the attack, describing it as a criminal act and a serious violation of the rule of law.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, stated that officers had initially taken the woman into protective custody while verifying the allegation before the mob attacked.

Police disclosed that several suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident, while efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend others involved.

The command assured residents that a full investigation had commenced and that all those found culpable would face prosecution.

Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, warned against jungle justice and attacks on security personnel, urging residents to report suspected criminal activities to law enforcement agencies rather than taking the law into their own hands.

The incident has drawn condemnation from community leaders, religious figures and civil society groups, who described the killing as a disturbing example of how unverified accusations and mob action can lead to irreversible tragedy.

Observers say the case highlights the urgent need to strengthen public confidence in the justice system and reinforce awareness that allegations must be investigated through lawful channels, not settled through violence.

Residents and rights advocates have called for swift prosecution of everyone involved, insisting that accountability is necessary to deter future incidents and reaffirm the sanctity of human life.
